@Jbeliski Sorry supposed to say…memory ISN’T faulty. I need to proof read.
March 20th, 2010 at 11:36 am
@unluckyfrank No, your memory is faulty. It wasn’t labled progressive until after the era had ended and the music was noted and discussed. I think even at one point they were calling it progressive art rock in the 80′s! Like anyone knew what that mean’t ! Now simply, I just like the term “prog rock”. Why not?

@Jbeliski
Appropos the Hackett quote, I remember he said they didn’t call their music progressive rock as in a particular style of music, they just wanted to break new ground and push the frontiers of what’s possible
, just like Fripp who was surely an influence on Hackett. Who cares anyway when it’s the supper of the might one to feast on.

@unluckyfrank
How ironic would it be if the coinage of “progressive rock” was a retrospective thing?
March 20th, 2010 at 1:31 pm
I think ther’isn’t a voice in the world like the voice of Peter Gabriel. They are fantastic.I love theri musci it’s magic.

How dare he be so beautiful
March 20th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
@Jbeliski. I can’t remember anyone using the term “progressive” to describe this genre back then. We always referred to it as “classical” or “art rock.” Perhaps my memory is faulty. I’ve searched the web for the origin of the term “progressive rock.” No one knows. One writer claims it’s origin is unknown, but that it was coined in 1969. So, perhaps you’re right. One essay states that “‘progressive rock,” was also sometimes known as “art rock,” or “classical rock.” Interesting.

@unluckyfrank Disagree, but that’s cool. They have used the term progressive music for over a hundred years for all new musical breakthroughs. That’s a quote from Steve Hackett, the man himself. Nonetheless, there has been a lot of discussion on what term to use for completely original music.

It’s amazing to see how talented Tony Banks was as a keyboardist and Peter as a singer/showman at this young age. It’s too bad Phil’s later public persona has overshadowed his formidable talent as a drummer. These guys were first rate musicians.

@dlm9293 Happy to hear, oh knowing one ; ) BTW I started with Tresspass as fate had it.

thanks i will….dont care too much for collins era stuf, too poppy for me
March 20th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
Correction: Back in the 70s we called it Classical Rock. Progressive is a relatively modern categorization for this amazing music. Some of the more adventurous journalists at the time dubbed it Art Rock.
It is however, nothing short of phenomenal!

@dlm9293 It always brings happiness to us in Genesis friends clubs (I’m friends with Garden Wall – Italian tribute band) when young people come aboard to keep this music alive. It was a very short creative time in the early 70′s when this music emerged and then completely disappeared. They call it progressive rock, because it exceeds normal rock music in structure. My advise to you is by entire CD’s from the Gabriel era instead of downloading single songs. Sit back and take an incredible voyage.

yeh my mother loves them…when i was really young i didn’t like them..but now im getting into them pretty heavily…still think peter gabriel was a better singer…like phil collins too tohugh

Peter Gabriel – one of the few music heroes who has stuck to his principals and has never put himself on a pedestal.
March 20th, 2010 at 7:39 pm
I stumbled upon them when I was I was pretty young too. Just don’t know why I like it so much and I never run across anyone who’s heard the old Genesis with Peter Gabriel singing. (’69-74). Just the newer sappy stuff. I never saw them live but love the Musical Box tribute band. Saw them, they say it’s exactly like seeing and hearing an early day Genesis concert. Hope you get into it. Peace.

Hey, i was just kidding. It’s pretty obscure music generally, cept on the ol YouTube community who go nuts about it. That’s the only reason I found your comment kinda funny . I really wasn’t being mocking at all.
